Description

Multi-panel figure with satellite and ground-based imagery of center pivot systems, with and without rust staining, in Nebraska. The rust color is the result of groundwater chemistry. The images show what the different systems looked like from satellite (Google Earth) and from the ground. One component of this study was to determine whether we could accurately identify “rusty pivots” based on satellite imagery, thus the paired images (A vs. B, C vs. D, and E vs. F) in the figure panels. More details are available at https://go.unl.edu/rustypivots. (A) Aerial view of full rust pivot from Google Earth. (B) Ground view of full rust pivot shown in (A). (C) Aerial view of no rust pivot from Google Earth. (D) Ground view of no rust pivot shown in (C). (E) Aerial view of part rust pivot from Google Earth. (F) Ground view of part rust pivot shown in (E).
